However,\u00a0we\u00a0 in Holistic Bodywork believe\u00a0it is our responsibility as a professional\u00a0people-worker to ensure that at least we do not reinforce old\u00a0injuries and the resulting\u00a0patterns\u00a0<strong>(<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>More in our<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Retraumatizing &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Article<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>.<\/strong><\/p><p>That&#8217;s what this article is about.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51fa44c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51fa44c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How can bodywork activate trauma?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39a6c10 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39a6c10\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is a short presentation.\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">(You can find an in depth article here)<\/span><\/p><p>From a neurophysiological point of view, trauma is an uncompleted state of survival-energy in \u00a0the autonomic nervous system\u00a0(ANS):\u00a0We experienced\u00a0a\u00a0dangerous\u00a0situation,\u00a0it activated our ANS which could not re-regulate afterwards.\u00a0<br \/>If this happens, this activation is chronically available in the nervous system and body\u00a0and can thus be easily &#8220;triggered&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; even in situations that are not actually dangerous. Triggers can be memories, movements, certain body perceptions, postures or touch.<\/p><p><strong>In a treatment, we<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>can easily<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>activate these by<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>talking<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>people<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>about their discomfort, touching and moving them or giving them exercises targeting problem areas.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Examples during<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>a<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>neck-treatment:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>We ask the client since when he has this pain and about possible causes <em>(eg a bicycle accident)<\/em><\/li><li>We massage the shoulder, which could reduce the old protective patterns, but the actual charge is still in the system, so that it increases the tension afterwards.<\/li><li>We move the cervical spine, which can trigger implicit memories of the accident, including incomplete movements, thus activating the protective tension again<\/li><li>&#8230;<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d0abc90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d0abc90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How can I recognize trauma?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba68d2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ba68d2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Before we can learn to deal with trauma, we first have to recognize it.\u00a0Because our clients\u00a0will\u00a0seldom say, &#8220;Oh my,\u00a0now the trauma from that bike crash has been reactivated due to the position of my head&#8221;.\u00a0Because from the inside what they actually experience is: overwhelm, tension,\u00a0anxiety\u00a0or &#8220;emotionality&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; without an understanding why this arises.<\/p><p>So it is up to us to recognize and identify the signs of trauma.\u00a0This is an important ability for bodyworkers of all kinds: being able to recognize trauma or the activation of the nervous system quickly.<\/p><p><strong>Physical signs to detect trauma include:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Sudden tensing of muscles without a physiological cause (especially fight and flight muscles)- clenching hands, tightening jaws, raised shoulders<\/li><li>Sudden collapse of muscles- collapse of upper body, loss of facial features, sagging of shoulders<\/li><li>Trembling without previous muscle fatigue<\/li><li>Changeof\u00a0breathing\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Highly accelerated breathing,\u00a0sudden flattening of\u00a0breathing\u00a0or apnoe<\/li><li>Sudden change in the blood circulation<\/li><li>Loss of facial expressions, especially around the eyes and forehead \u00e0 this is a very reliable sign<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Psycho-emotional<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>signs to detect trauma are:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Suddenlyemerging\u00a0Emotions\u00a0&#8211; anger,\u00a0fear, sometimes\u00a0grief<\/li><li>Dissociation-\u00a0the\u00a0person\u00a0is\u00a0no longer responsive,\u00a0suddenly\u00a0&#8220;falling asleep&#8221; or loosing muscular tension (hypotonic)<\/li><li>Impulses to orient-\u00a0open\u00a0eyes, looking around, uncertain questions<\/li><li>Increasingly incoherent &#8211; person can no longer respond clearly or respond to questions<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>IMPORTANT:<br \/><\/strong>It is about sudden changes that are not clearly explained by the treatment.<br \/>AND we always collect several indicators before we form a hypothesis. Not every change in breathing is a trauma.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What this may look like during a neck treatment:<\/strong><\/p><p>Situation: The practitioner mobilizes\u00a0the cervical spine in supine position and turns the head of the client to the side\u00a0to massage and stretch\u00a0the trapezius.<\/p><p>Possible signs of trauma:<\/p><ul><li>The client grows pale, suddenly opens his eyes and looks around with the corner of his eyes<\/li><li>Feedback to questions is short, imprecise and given with a monotone voice s, or the client is even suddenly &#8220;gone&#8221;<\/li><li>The tension of the muscle suddenly increases sharply and the shoulder is pulled up<\/li><li>The tension dissappears suddenly &#8211; and perhaps even discharge a portion of the tension.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Here are a few simple tools from trauma-therapy you can orient towards:<\/strong><\/p><ol><li><strong>Recognize and\u00a0respect\u00a0boundaries<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Recognizing boundaries is indispensable in trauma-sensitive bodywork, because change happens at a person\u2019s boundaries\u00a0&#8211; not beyond them\u00a0or even without them.<\/p><p>It is important\u00a0to\u00a0listen to the\u00a0subtle signals that\u00a0say\u00a0&#8220;stop,&#8221; or &#8220;slow down&#8221; even if\u00a0we believe that\u00a0the maximum impact the tissue can handle has not yet been reached.<\/p><p>One of the basic rules in HB is that every boundary is good for something.\u00a0We\u00a0want to recognize and respect even the small impulses of the client \u2013 because this enables completely new paradigms of treatment, s.\u00a0Point 2 for that.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>Follow\u00a0(physical)\u00a0impulses of the client<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Once we find a boundary, it is paramount to listen to the impulses of the client without pushing or manipulating.\u00a0Because frequently healing impulses will naturally arise from the body and psyche of the client when we stay with a boundary:<\/p><ul><li>With shock-trauma there are often unfinished movements (the body wanted to curl up and protect itself during a bicycle accident), the completion of these movements relaxes the entire system \u2013 it can feel safe again.<\/li><li>Developmental trauma is often expressed in protective postures ( eg, raising one&#8217;s shoulders when one expects to be hurt) and many approaches want to break through these postures (armor). In our opinion, it is much more humane and effective to offer support to the protection so that it can relax without being broken.<\/li><\/ul><p>When these impulses\u00a0recognized,\u00a0valued and\u00a0respected,\u00a0healing\u00a0and\u00a0next developmental steps\u00a0often\u00a0happen by themselves.<\/p><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong>Provide\u00a0a\u00a0safe container for\u00a0discharge<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Should there be a physical or emotional discharge in the session (shaking, fear, sadness&#8230;), it is important to offer a safe container. A container includes openness and boundaries.<\/p><p><strong>a) Welcome unloading &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0The client is welcome just as he is.\u00a0That is, we\u00a0also welcome strong emotions, young parts and physical reactions.\u00a0<br \/>It is important for us as clinicians to feel secure in ourselves as well as knowing and understand these dynamics.<\/p><p><strong>b) Ensure safety &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0At the same time it is also important to stand for clarity and\u00a0\u00a0With trauma, it is very easy to get lost in emotions, sensations and\u00a0old stories (\u201ctrauma-vortex\u201d).This is NOT helpful but\u00a0can instead lead\u00a0to more dysregulation, regression and fragmentation (\u201cretraumatization\u201d)\u00a0.\u00a0<br \/>We offer security by being\u00a0open and setting boundaries,\u00a0returning to resources\u00a0and helping the client\u00a0understand\u00a0what is happening\u00a0.<\/p><ol start=\"4\"><li><strong>Find orientation in the here and now<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>Trauma comes from the past &#8211; but we experience the fear, stress and tension patterns as if they were needed right now. Through orientation we can question and check this. We use orientation as a tool in two ways:<\/p><p><strong>a) Helping clients orient themselves here and now &#8211; <\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">With questions like:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Are you aware of a danger right now?<\/li><li>How does the ground feel beneath you?<\/li><li>Do you have any impulses along with this tension?<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>b) Providing cognitive orientation to the client &#8211;<\/strong>As a practitioner, it is important to be able to offer the client a mental orientation so that he understands what is happening in him:<\/p><ul><li>Why do the muscles tighten again and again?<\/li><li>Why does fear come up when we work on the neck?<\/li><li>How can the bicycle accident still impact him?<\/li><\/ul><p>This understanding is\u00a0important so that the results of the treatment can be processed and digested in the long term.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae08f23 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae08f23\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Some last words<\/strong><\/p><p>We hope this outline gives you a few ideas on how you can better recognize trauma in the future and handle it professionally.<\/p><p>If you have questions, feel free to contact us.\u00a0This topic is very important to us, because in our daily practice we are again and again confronted with people, where exactly this went wrtong &#8211; in both roles, therapist and clients.<\/p><p>We hope that more therapists will\u00a0use and internalize\u00a0this knowledge\u00a0so that we can sustainably help more and more people.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trauma is not\u00a0just a much talked about topic right\u00a0now,\u00a0it is a part of human existence.\u00a0What we could not process in the past remains as a trauma in our body and nervous system.
