Especially for all of us working with people, trying our best to support them using the best tools we have in our toolbox.\u00a0<\/p><p>That is why in this this article we want to explore what retraumatisation is (that it has nothing to do with evil intent) as well as what we can do to avoid it and actually help people<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-403b95a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"403b95a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is retraumatization?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51cfa90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"51cfa90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The definition for\u00a0\u2018retraumatization\u2019 is:\u00a0re-experiencing a\u00a0trauma\u00a0WITHOUT\u00a0this resulting in change or discharge\u00a0.\u00a0This can be considered &#8220;refreshing&#8221; the stuck trauma.<br \/>If a\u00a0trauma\u00a0pattern purely activated and relived, it typically amplifies.\u00a0Because\u00a0this is neurophysiologically strengthening the neural networks, which makes the re-activation of these exact networks in the<b>\u00a0<\/b>future<b>\u00a0<\/b>easier and more likely.<\/p><p>So a retraumatization can happen, if something that could not be processed in the past is activated here and now, and does not get processed here and now either.\u00a0<\/p><p><u><a href=\"https:\/\/holistic-bodywork.org\/en\/blog-shock-developmental-trauma\/\">As discussed in the last article<\/a>,<\/u> Holistic Bodywork distinguishes between shock- and developmental-trauma.\u00a0This distinction is also important here, because retraumatization works differently in each case:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Retraumatization <\/strong><strong>in shock-trauma:<\/strong>\u00a0The survival energy stuck in the nervous system\u00a0because of a\u00a0shock trauma\u00a0is\u00a0activated\u00a0<em>(<\/em><em>e.g the<\/em>\u00a0<em>shock of a<\/em>\u00a0<em>bicycle accident<\/em><em>).<\/em> If the nervous system can then not re-regulate (calm down) the chronic activation will increase.<\/li><li><strong>Retraumatization in <\/strong><strong>developmental-trauma:<\/strong> Protective strategies and identifications of the past are activated<i> (e.g the fear of being hurt and the belief &#8220;I cannot trust anyone,&#8221; together with the charge of the nervous system, beliefs &amp; behaviors &#8230;)<\/i>. If this is triggered in the treatment without being recognized and clarified, this can easily &#8220;confirm&#8221; the protective strategies and identifications, thus further strengthening.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><p>None of this means that the therapist or Facilitator is doing anything evil or malicious and it does not mean, that they actively hurt the person. <br \/>But what can happen is that this experience reinforces the pattern from the past &#8211; and we miss a chance for actual change with that.<\/p><p>For the remainder of this article we want to look into HOW this happens. We take a quite technical perspective on what retraumatization is, so we can understand it more deeply and then explore <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic-bodywork.org\/en\/blog-how-to-handle-trauma-professionally\/\">(also in our next article)<\/a> what we can do to support healing in exactly these moments.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f56cbb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f56cbb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How can this happen during bodywork?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4be723d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4be723d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We would like to explain this with a very simple example:<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Treatment of client (30, male) with neck problems<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>:<\/strong><\/p><p><i>Initial situation: <\/i>The client comes with\u00a0recurring neck tension.\u00a0<i>Posture:<\/i> raised shoulder,\u00a0extended head.\u00a0He also complains about sleep problems,\u00a0digestive issues\u00a0and regular headaches.<\/p><p>In the treatment there is the following sequence:<\/p><ol><li>The\u00a0practitioner massages the neck.<\/li><li>In doing so, the client suddenly tenses muscles of the neck, opens his eyes and looks around.<\/li><li>The therapist then says &#8220;Let it go!&#8221; And\u00a0continues\u00a0with increased intensity.<\/li><li>The client suddenly\u00a0lets go and\u00a0even falls asleep.<\/li><li>When asked at the end of the treatment, the client gives nonspecific answers: &#8220;Everything OK.&#8221;<\/li><\/ol><p style=\"text-align: left;\">It does not take more than that to allow a retraumatization\u00a0to take place\u00a0\u2013 and not every neck massage has to end in trauma.\u00a0To understand HOW this sequence can lead a client to be \u00a0retraumatized, let&#8217;s discuss 3 examples:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d06703 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7d06703\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Case Study 1: A Client without trauma<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7d3b87 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f7d3b87\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When the tension of\u00a0<strong>Client<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>1<\/strong> does not have a traumatic origin, but is for example purely habitual, this could be straightforward treatment.<\/p><p>The client tenses because he is used to doing so. He looks around, because the treatment hurts. Upon the instruction of the practitioner, he can notice that he is tensing, let go and thereby relax deeply.\u00a0Him falling asleep happens in stages and is restful for him.<\/p><p>If this is everything that happens, the treatment would have gone well.\u00a0The nonspecific answers at the end of the treatment are purely an expression of relaxation.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the treatment\u00a0tension patterns, pain and posture should change sustainably.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d9d535 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6d9d535\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Case Study 2: Client with shock trauma (bicycle accident)<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56ba2ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"56ba2ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For a client with shock trauma, however, this progression of the treatment would be indicative of very different processes.\u00a0It would then that the same symptoms, ie tensions and headaches, are occurring more strongly afterwards.<\/p><p><strong>Client 2<\/strong>\u00a0had a bicycle accident 12 months before the treatment where he hit his head.\u00a0The clinical investigations showed no structural damage.\u00a0Yet the client could not process the shock and fear of the accident at that time &#8211; they got stuck in his neck.<br \/>The symptoms slowly showed up during the months after the accident;\u00a0as it happens quite frequently with shock trauma.\u00a0That&#8217;s why this client\u00a0does not connect\u00a0the\u00a0pain to the accident.<br \/><strong>Yet:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>headaches, digestive problems, sleep problems are\u00a0all\u00a0signs\u00a0and consequences of\u00a0a\u00a0chronic activation of the sympathetic\u00a0nervous system\u00a0\u2013 which is the trauma.<\/p><p>During the treatment of the neck\u00a0,\u00a0this charge of the nervous system is &#8220;activated\u00a0&#8220;, when the practitioner puts the neck in the position it was during the accident.\u00a0That&#8217;s why the nervous system shows the same reaction as it did back then: fear, tensing up, muscle contraction.\u00a0This happens so quickly and unexpectedly that the client cannot cope with it well.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Important: The tensing and looking around are both expressions of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>activation<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in the nervous system.<\/strong><\/p><p>At this point it would be possible for the client to work with this tension with the help of a trauma-sensitive practitioner &#8230; But in this example, she only works\u00a0harder against the tension. From this he developed the conviction that he cannot trust anyone, but has to do everything on his own.\u00a0His posture <i>(raised shoulders, protection of the heart)<\/i>\u00a0is an expression of that.<\/p><p>Since the practitioner works on this tension, she also touches this structure, because attitude and identifications are very closely linked. That&#8217;s why the client tenses:\u00a0he is afraid of being hurt and tries\u00a0to protect\u00a0himself.\u00a0Even if the client does not say it explicitly,\u00a0the body tries to set a limit.\u00a0&#8220;STOP!&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>If this limit is perceived as such, the client and the practitioner can create a base of trust in their treatment together.<\/p><p>The &#8220;let it go!&#8221; of the therapist, however, reinforces what the client already \u201cknows\u201d: his limits are not respected and he cannot trust the therapist. He even feels like he&#8217;s being made wrong for his tension.<br \/>The letting go is the strategy he used in his childhood when he was in such situations: giving up, collapsing and waiting for\u00a0the situation to end &#8211; neurophysiologically this is also a freeze.<\/p><p>After the treatment, tension and pain become even stronger, together with the decision to never go back to a massage, but to deal with these problems on his own.\u00a0In other words:\u00a0the identification and thus\u00a0the trauma of the past\u00a0are\u00a0strengthened.<\/p><p><strong>In summary:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>The physical tension of the client is an expression of his basic attitude towards life<\/li><li>Tension is the body&#8217;s attempt to protect itself<\/li><li>By not acknowledging this attempt and need for safety, the pattern of his childhood is repeated<\/li><li>After the treatment, the\u00a0old survival structure is strengthened\u00a0: &#8220;Never again!&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43f0aed elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"43f0aed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What can we do to avoid this?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10c74a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"10c74a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>What we can do, we have formulated in more detail in <a href=\"https:\/\/holistic-bodywork.org\/en\/blog-how-to-handle-trauma-professionally\/\">THIS article<\/a>.<\/p><p>Here are just a few short thoughts:<\/p><ol><li><strong>Recognize when a trauma is activated in the client <\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>The practitioner must recognize what is happening so that she can handle it. This means: being able to recognise the emotional and vegetative signs of trauma and to classify them properly.<\/p><p>Only then\u00a0can\u00a0she be\u00a0sure\u00a0to not\u00a0miss the moments when a trauma is activated.\u00a0Because no matter where\u00a0she works on the body:\u00a0She always works on the nervous system, where old traumas are stored.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>And then support the clients in making a new (different) experience Here and Now<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p>So that he\u00a0does\u00a0not\u00a0experience\u00a0the same thing\u00a0again, but\u00a0can handle his emotions and impulses in a novel way.<\/p><ul><li>For Shock Trauma, this means that the practitioner supports the client in safely discharging the old charge and reorienting in the safe present.<\/li><li>For Developmental Trauma this means helping the clients acknowleding old survival strategies and checking if they are still necessary Here and Now.<\/li><\/ul><div><a href=\"https:\/\/holistic-bodywork.org\/en\/blog-how-to-handle-trauma-professionally\/\">If you want to learn more: You can find the second article here<\/a><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The short answer is:\u00a0Yes, we can retraumatize people &#8211;\u00a0during a massage, a yoga\u00a0session, a therapeutic session or any everyday\u00a0life\u00a0interaction with our partner.
