{"id":5290,"date":"2019-04-24T10:34:51","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T08:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/holistic-bodywork.org\/blog-was-ist-trauma\/"},"modified":"2019-05-23T12:43:38","modified_gmt":"2019-05-23T10:43:38","slug":"blog-what-is-trauma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/holistic-bodywork.org\/en\/blog-what-is-trauma\/","title":{"rendered":"PART 1: What is Trauma?"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"5290\" class=\"elementor elementor-5290 elementor-4721\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-afc9344 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"afc9344\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1202774\" data-id=\"1202774\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e4f574 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1e4f574\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>&#8216;Trauma&#8217; as a topic is very \u201cin\u201d<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Psychotherapy, medicine, yoga, self-help books and yes, also bodywork and massage increasingly deal with traumas and the effects of such.<br \/>An example of this is the ICD- 11 World Health Organization (WHO) catalogue. in which trauma is recognized as a possible origin of a wide range of symptoms.<\/p><p>Because of the increase in awareness and publicity for this topic, we often encounter many questions and worries about it in our training courses:<\/p><ul><li>How can I recognize trauma?<\/li><li>Can I retraumatize people?<\/li><li>How can I deal professionally with traumatized clients?<\/li><\/ul><p>These are all important questions which we also cover in other articles.\u00a0But in this article I\u00a0want to step back\u00a0a little and talk about the following question:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-403b95a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"403b95a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\"What is trauma, actually?\"<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51cfa90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"51cfa90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In many discussions (between bloggers, therapists, Journalists and even respected authors) the word &#8220;TRAUMA&#8221; is used very differently and sometimes imprecisely. In extreme cases, every unpleasant or stressful experience can be referred to as &#8220;traumatic&#8221;.<br \/>That&#8217;s why I want to\u00a0create some clarity\u00a0in this\u00a0article and offer a more subtle perspective on this topic.\u00a0My hope is that\u00a0after this article you can answer for yourself what trauma actually is.<\/p><p>The etymological origin of the word Trauma lies in the Greek:\u00a0tr\u00e1\u035euma\u00a0(\u03a4\u03c1\u03b1\u1fe6\u03bc\u03b1)\u00a0literally meaning\u00a0\u2018wound, injury, damage &#8216;.\u00a0Since the 18th century, it has been used as a term for a &#8216;psychological shock&#8217;.<\/p><p>Modern trauma researchers, such as Stephen Porges, Peter Levine and Bessel van der Kolk, emphasize the role of the autonomic nervous system in cases of such shock. An event can only be called a traumatizing event if it has traumatic effects. And it cannot be objectively predicted, which event has traumatic consequences for which person.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d06703 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7d06703\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What are features of traumatic events?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f7d3b87 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f7d3b87\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Each of us has a\u00a0lot of experiences &#8211; including many negative ones.\u00a0Few of them are actually traumatizing.\u00a0What is the difference between normal experiences and traumatizing ones?<\/p><p>For an Event to be\u00a0<strong>potentially<\/strong> traumatizing,\u00a0it must meet two main criteria:<\/p><ol><li>It is unbearable \u2013 I experience a situation as existentially threatening or unbearable<\/li><li>It exceeds the individual coping mechanisms \u2013 I have (in my experience) no possibility to cope with the situation, I am at its mercy<\/li><\/ol><p>(Different researchers stress experienced\u00a0feelings of helplessness, horror, etc. These can be understood as a consequence of the first two\u00a0points.)<\/p><p><strong>Important:<\/strong>\u00a0It can not be said which situation is traumatic for whom, as it depends on how an individual experiences the situation (unbearable\u00a0) and\u00a0whether\u00a0the\u00a0individual has opportunities\u00a0to deal with the situation that\u00a0situation (no way to do something).<\/p><p><strong>Back to the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>example of the bicycle accident:<\/strong> The spoke of my bike pushes on my calf and it is unbearable for my physical structures\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0they can no longer withstand the pressure. Due to the position of the calf, there is no way for the tissue to escape.\u00a0So\u00a0the spoke punctures my calf.<br \/><strong>And transferred to a mental trauma:<\/strong> Due to the spoke in my calf, I have\u00a0strong, unbearable\u00a0pain.\u00a0Because of my injuries, I\u00a0cannot move\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0I have no way to act but feel\u00a0helpless.<\/p><p><strong>This situation could be<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>traumatic<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2013<\/strong><strong>\u00a0but <\/strong><strong>it does not have to be.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>That depends<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>on what happens afterwards.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d9d535 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6d9d535\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When \/ Why do traumatic effects develop?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56ba2ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"56ba2ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>An event only becomes a trauma if we cannot process it.<\/strong> No matter how overwhelming and unbearable a situation may be, as long as we\u00a0process, metabolize,\u00a0and complete\u00a0what has happened, there must be no lasting\u00a0(&#8220;emotional&#8221;)\u00a0impact on our lives.<\/p><p><strong>We process, metabolize and<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>integrate<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>an event by<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Discharge the survival energy from the nervous system(trembling,\u00a0movement\u00a0&#8230;)<\/li><li>Feel and let go of emotions connected to the situation (anger, fear &#8230;)<\/li><li>Develop a coherent and healthy mental orientation about what happened (coherent memories, clear narrative &#8230;)<\/li><li>Can learn from it and develop alternative behavioural options that we can use in the future (imagining them, practising them&#8230;)<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>If these steps do not take place,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>aspects of the event get \u201cstuck\u201d in our system and affect future situations<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Our nervous system is chronically activated, we feel insecure, annoyed, overreact to simple situations<\/li><li>Old emotions stay in our system and can be triggered quickly- we suddenly get angry, sad in simple situations<\/li><li>We develop an unhealthy understanding of our self &amp; the world(beliefs) &#8211; &#8220;it\u2019s all my fault&#8221;, &#8220;I&#8217;m bad&#8221;<\/li><li>We are stuck in rigid patterns of behaviour &#8211; avoidance strategies and repeating patterns<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27d3ec5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"27d3ec5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The traumatic effects make an event traumatizing<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e9ca630 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e9ca630\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It needs the traumatic effects of an event so that we can describe an event as traumatic. If no effects remain, the event was not traumatizing.<\/p><p>In other words: we cannot look at a situation from the outside and say, &#8220;THAT is a trauma&#8221; When an event is completely processed, it has no effects on the &#8220;soul&#8221; or neurophysiology \u2013 and thus also not the person\u2019s future.<\/p><p><strong>That&#8217;s why in Holistic Bodywork we also use the word<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>&#8216;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>trauma<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>&#8216;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>to denote the lasting effects that remain stuck in a person\u2019s system.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43f0aed elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"43f0aed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How trauma affects our lives:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a2d93c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8a2d93c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>What we could not process from past events affects our lives negatively \u2013 not the event itself.<\/p><p><strong>Old<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>emotions, activation and beliefs<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>remain stuck in our system and influence<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>our behaviour, feeling and thinking<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>here and now, even if the event is long gone and forgotten.<\/strong><\/p><p>This happens without us being aware that these are old traumas.<\/p><ul><li>When my nervous system is chronically inFight-Flight Mode\u00a0due to my cycling accident, I feel tense, anxious and angry in my life &#8211; but I do not know where that feeling comes from.<\/li><li>If old emotions are triggered, I feel helpless, angry or panicked now \u2013 even though these emotions are from the past<\/li><li>And I believe my compulsive behaviour to avoid bicycles and roads are necessary and correct \u2013 even though they mess with my life.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>We do not experience trauma<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>from the outside.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>But it influences our present life from within.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22eeb28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"22eeb28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">In summary:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03fea29 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"03fea29\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span class=\"notranslate\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">Trauma<\/span><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">is<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">the wound that<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">remains<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">after an event<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0is over <\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">and affects our life negatively. Trauma &#8216;refers to the traumatic effects<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">that remain when we could not process an unbearable event in the past so that emotions,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">nervous system<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">activation, beliefs and behaviour<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0got stuck and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">influence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">our behaviour, thoughts and feelings in the future<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; font-family: 'Cambria',serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"notranslate\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Cambria',serif;
